How to clean your WordPress admin menu

March 7, 2023

We use WordPress a lot!

Why we use it a lot is a topic for another post but if you are here reading this post, I bet you use it too.

WordPress allows you to develop your site fast and easily but at the same time, you have the possibility to create a platform that is highly extensible. This is one of the main benefits of using WordPress: Extensibility. This is possible because of a very vast list of plugins available to install in an instance. For every feature you may need to implement in your website, there’s a great chance that there is a plugin built for that feature.

This approach brought WordpRess where it is today, namely the most used Content Management System in the world. This very website is built on WordPress.

But, using multiple plugins can make your WordPress admin menu very crowded. Most of the plugins you see in the admin menu you probably will set once and don’t touch them again for a long time.

We faced this problem ourselves on more than one occasion. Even if we try to keep the number of plugins at a bare minimum, there will always be plugins that will put a menu entry in your admin menu. And this is a problem, especially on e-commerce websites where the store manager needs to focus on products and orders.

How to solve it?

Of course, there’s the easy option for a developer to remove one menu using a simple function built in WordPress: remove_menu_page(‘your_plugin_slug’); But for this, you have to put the code in the theme’s functions.php file, which is not a good practice to begin with.

In comes Admin Menu Cleaner

To keep things simple for us and for our customers we created a simple but effective plugin called Admin Menu Cleaner. You can download it free from the WordPress directory here or go to the plugin’s page: https://alfadevelopers.ro/en/plugins/admin-menu-cleaner/

The plugin is very straightforward: install it, activate it, go to the plugin’s settings (or simply click the newly created menu item “Menu cleaner”) and check the menu items that you want to hide. Then all you have to do is click the toggle on or off to show or hide the items.

I bet you will find it useful! At least I do 🙂 And we use it on every website we develop on WordPress.

Give it a try and let us know in the comments what you think about it!
